... in the same location in Springfield, Tennessee, just north of Nashville. It began five generations ago when Andrew Jackson Hinkle moved his family here from Virginia. The Hinkle’s were farmers, but supplemented their income by making ladder back chairs. During the hot summer months they would hand carve chair frames out of oak, hickory, and beech. The harsh winters found them inside weaving the seats of the chairs by hand.
As production increased rocking chairs were added to the line. A small country store and a tobacco barn served as a makeshift factory. The family gave up farming in 1932 and began producing chairs full time. Then, in 1946 William Hinkle, Sr. returned from serving in World War II and bought the business from his father.
By 1948, Hinkle Chair Company had sixteen full-time employees that could produce an incredible two hundred chairs per day. Needless to say the operation had moved from its cramped facilities to two buildings which were used exclusively for chair manufacturing. As the company progressed other products made their way into the Hinkle Chair lineup. Tables of various shapes and sizes were offered. Hutches and buffets were being made out of the same quality hardwoods.
The 1990’s found our production to be almost 100% rocking chairs. The demand was so great for rockers that we were unable to continue manufacturing many of our other products. In 1996 we built two new buildings-one housed our production facilities, the other a state of the art finishing system. We are now able to meet the demands of the rocking chair market and also offer new and exciting products that we know you will want to consider.
